Data Breach
This comic uses an extreme comparison to visualize the disconnect between cyber security and physical security that many people experience. This is somewhat understandable because unlike in the above scenario, the effects of cyber breaches can appear much less tangible than physical theft. As a result, people often treat updating passwords and general cyber security as merely an inconvenience. Only, 1 in 3 people sampled changed their password after discovering they were subjected to a data breach.
The issue is, that although the effects of data breaches are less tangible, they are still very real and potentially problematic. Upon initially being leaked, your data is compiled, stored, and auctioned off on the dark web. It is then purchased by those with a variety of bad intentions ranging from unsolicited email/address spam advertising to all-out identity theft. Research done by Google and Stanford has revealed that those exposed to data breaches are 5x more likely to be targeted for phishing scams and malware. In addition, a strong correlation has been detected between a rise in data breaches and identity theft.
